Some Jewel fans have started a Jewel chat on AOL with a room named "EDA Jewel Fans" under the Arts and Entertainment section. This might be a helpful outlet to meet other Jewel fans for those of us who break down and pay for AOL.
Someone recently noticed Chasing Down the Dawn for around 7 dollars at a local Barnes and Noble store. For those of you who do not yet have a copy, you may wish to pick one up. There is some interesting reading in the book. I have found several sections of interesting including a piece describing Atz trying to hook up with a new "mommy" for Jewel.
Ty was asked how Jewel and him get time to see each other. He stated that he gets plenty of time in between competition and training. He also said that Jewel finds time to see him when she is not touring (which she hasn't done since 1999 basically). Of course, lately Jewel has been in the studio recording her next album. This recent message indicates that they are still dating, which I believe makes this the longest (recent) relationship Jewel has had since she became popular.
The store at the official Jewel web site is selling Bits and Baubles CDs.. 3 of the tracks are live! The CDs were sold originally at Target Stores (Dayton Hudson Corporation) during the Fall of 1999. These are new CDs that are unopened!
The site should be completely migrated to the new Windows 2000 server. I am fixing some minor bugs as a result of the change over. E-mail, News, Guest book, T.V. Appearances, and other dynamic areas of the site appear to be working properly. Database access is a lot faster thanks to the new backend. I'm hoping to add more multimedia content since the connection is faster. MP3 and Real Player formatted files are on the top of the list. I also have more pictures to add as well.
As promised, I will share the setup I had previously. The old server was also on Windows 2000 SP2. I had a 128k ISDN line with a low-end ADC Kentrox router. I was using IIS 5 for a web server. The hardware was a Celeron 466mhz chip on a 100mhz bus (ASUS P2B-L motherboard), with 128 mb of ram. Part of the time I ran Primary DNS as well. Secondary was done by a friend. I used Microsoft DNS server (unfortunetely, as Bind is a lot better). Mail was run by my friend Rob. He used IMail on Windows 2000. I used Active Server Pages for the site content with a visual basic DLL I wrote to handle some of the database access. The reason I moved the site to the new server is two fold. First I wanted to make the browsing experience faster for visitors. Also I needed to cut some costs. Dedicated ISDN service was costing around 100 dollars a month plus the telco charges. I have since downgraded to a cable modem ( the reason i say downgraded is because I can not run web, ftp, or any other type of server on a cable modem. Also they are extremely inconsistant compared to an ISDN line.) I averaged 14K/s on my ISDN line both ways. Quite good. :) For those of you in Michigan still using Dial-Up, you may want to try my old isp, http://www.wmis.net. The router supported NAT (Network Address Translation), and had a proxy for common incomming ports (port mapping basically).
I have written all of my ASP code in a text editor, usually UltraEdit (windows) or BBEdit Lite (Mac). The web site is created with text editors and Macromedia Dreamweaver 3 for Macintosh. I also test the site on a few other platforms including Solaris 8 (intel) with Netscape and Lynx, WebTV (emulator), and a few times with a Sega DreamCast.
Over the next week, I will be moving the web site to another server. Currently, the web site is hosted from my apartment in Kalamazoo, Michigan. I have a dedicated ISDN line to host the content. Multimedia content is already on the new server and has been located there for several months. The new server is on a T1 line, so surfing to this site should be quicker. The reason for the switch is both speed and financial. I was hoping for DSL service to catch on here, but only a small part of Kalamazoo can get the service. Cable does not allow web hosting so the site will have to be moved.
The total down time is estimated to be around 3 to 4 hours. Static content migration will be transparent, but moving the database (where news, guest book, lyrics, and other content are stored) will take some time. After the move, I will publish more information on my current setup for those of you that are curious how I pulled this off for seven months.
