Changes to FG

First, I'd like to thank Scott and Tanner for several years of hard work on Planet Jewel. Recently, Scott called it quits.

As many of you probably noticed, I changed the splash screen and index page recently. I wanted to give the site an updated look, and reinforce that this site is still operational. I feel like an old timer now, since this is one of the few "early" Jewel web sites still running. Although my site didn't start running till 1997, I still feel it represents the "old school" style and as such have decided to leave my content up as look as possible. As far as I know, this is the only updated US jewel website that has been on the web since before spirit. Since Planet Jewel, Pieces of Jewel, and many other sites are no longer running I feel it is my place to make up for this "hole." I have saved some content from a few sites that have closed down and now feel I should post them to help out many of you who have never heard and seen this information. Most of my pictures were acquired from Pieces of Jewel and several other sites with permission. I also have the complete quiet warrior archive as well (real audio). I was mirroring quiet warrior for awhile right before that webmaster gave up updating. Last I check (about 3 months ago) the links were still pointing to my old mirror. I lost my hosting deal and informed him the links would go with no reply. I will post those real audio files soon with the condition that no one uses them on other sites and that if he ever wants to bring his site back I will mirror the files for him and remove the links on my site.

As I'm in college again, I suspect it will take awhile to do all this. (there are at least 60 real audio files alone)

I think the biggest loss to the Jewel community was pieces of jewel. For example, there was a list of practically everything jewel did from her birth to around 1997 on that site.

As of late, I've found myself wondering if i should post this information or not. I suppose losing the info on pieces of jewel and now planet jewel really pissed me off.

I'd also like to say that if this site goes down for over a year... please feel free to replicate the information on your sites provided you publish that it came from Lucas Holt's website "foolish games". I highly encourage backing up information so others will have it someday. Also when I say to wait a year.. I mean that the site is not on the web at all... not that I haven't updated it.

Sorry about rambling. Now for the new stuff: I plan on publishing at least 60 real audio files in the next month. I also plan on updating the biography again. There are several big errors in it... for one, Jewel did NOT get a grammy for best new artist. She was nominated for a grammy. I also plan to migrate info from the discography and biography together to make a "better" bio. I plan on adding summary sheets for different "categories" of information. I also plan on improving navigation on this site. I want to fix bad links, i've already corrected the links page. I plan on trying to verify information and from now on to state sources of info for others to do research, etc. I don't want bad information to continue to circulate as it has in the past. I just listened to an interview from 1999 where the reporter said jewel grew up in a shed her whole life. Now thats pathetic. Most recent info suggests that Jewel didn't live in Homer till she was a teen. She was born in Utah, lived in alaksa (but not in homer...) until her parents got divorced and went to hawaii for some time, and then moved to homer with her father. On a side note, I talked to a student in my eng 111 course spring semester and learned a lot about Homer. Her sister lives in Homer. They do not have any indoor bathrooms, only outhouses. Living in that environment may explain Jewel's interest in the Clear Water Project. Just a thought!

I'll close by saying that I hope everyone enjoys the changes to the site during the next few months.

Jewel to perform on 10/1

Jewel will perform three songs at a WLTW FM charity benefit event at
Madison Square Garden in New York City on October 1st.. Those interested
should listen to WLTW or check the local paper for details. Tickets go on
sale this Friday. Other performers include Kenny Loggins, Bonnie Raitt,
Lonestar, Luther Vandross and James Taylor.

Sweet Home Alabama Soundtrack CD

As we recently mentioned, Jewel recorded a cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd's
classic, "Sweet Home Alabama," for a new Disney film by the same name.
This movie is due out in mid-September and is a romantic comedy starring
Reese Witherspoon and features Jewel's title song during the closing scene
and credits.

The soundtrack CD will include Jewel's title song, songs by Sheryl Crow,
Ryan Adams, Dolly Parton, Norah Jones, among others and is currently
scheduled to be released on Hollywood Records on Tuesday, September 24th.

Summary of BBC interview/show

This summary was posted by Chris Groves to a jewel mailing list:

"Paul Gambaccini investigates what's happening in different musical genres
on both sides of the Atlantic - pop, rock, R n B, country, and also takes a
look
at the state of the music business.

By talking to musicians, record executives and musical commentators, Paul
will discover the recent directions taken in each genre and look for signs of
creative regeneration and optimism or artistic decline.

In addition to the discussion with his interviewees, Paul draws his own
personal conclusions about the different forms of music examined in the series.

Programme three: What's Going On In The Music Business?
The sales of singles in the States have dramatically declined as record
companies have abandoned the format to encourage album sales. Yet album
sales have also dived. The spread of digital technology has sent shock waves
through the music industry. The consumer's easy access to music files on the
internet and CD-writing equipment threatens the traditional way of
distributing
music. Copyright issues regarding the ownership of recorded work are at the
centre of future relationships between artists and record companies. How is
the business - now dominated by three enormous conglomerates - reacting to
this revolution?

Paul discusses these issues with Jewel, Aimee Mann, Michelle Branch,
Billboard writer Michael Ellis and EMI executive Tony Wadsworth. "

BBC interview online

From the official jewel mailing list:

Last night, BBC Radio 2's Wednesday night program "What's Going On"
focused on the current state of the music industry and among others,
included an interview with Jewel taped earlier this year. You can listen
to the entire program in RealAudio by going here:

Jewel Video Director contest

From the official jewel mailing list: (see jeweljk.com)

The finalists and winner of the Jewel Video Director Search contest are
now being profiled on Soul City Cafe. Check out shots of the winner,
Marcos Efron, working with Jewel on the "This Way" video set. Efron
directed the video, which was based on his winning concept on August 27th.
The video will debut this month. You can also see how stiff the
competition was by checking out the work of the four finalists. Pay a

Upcomming Jewel interviews

I'd like to point out that the comments I have from the radio about 9/11 are most likely the access hollywood video. If I heard it on the radio, its probably available somewhere online.

From the official mailing list:

Although broadcast details are not available yet, Jewel conducted several
interviews from the set of the "This Way" video shoot earlier this week.
Interviews and soundbites were taped for later broadcast on CNN's
Entertainment Weekly Daily News, The TV Guide Channel, E- Entertainment
and Reuters. Jewel also was interviewed by Gene Simmons of KISS fame, for
Extra, and spoke briefly with Access Hollywood, regarding 9/11, which will
likely air sometime around that date.
