I moved the site today to its new home. I had several problems with the transition but i feel that most services are now working. The message board and guest book might have a few permissions problems yet. I'll look at that later. I had to recompile PHP again to get mysql access resulting in downtime with the news. The RSS content was broken as well because of a hostname issue with java and mysql.
the email form might be broken as well. I need to test a lot of things still.
Anyone transfering files will notice its rather SLOW. The bandwidth cap on this connection is around 384 Kb/s downstream and 256 Kb/s upstream. The previous site was capped over 1.5 Mb/s sync. I wish I could afford more, but 100 dollars a month is a bit much right now. The new setup is free since I'm colo'd at work. Free except i have to move their stuff to my PC, and i lose my PC. (only have my iMac at home now)
I'd ask for donations, but I don't believe I can legally because of the site content. I'd be making a "profit" then.
According to NBC, Lyon's Den has NOT been cancelled, it's on "hiatus", networkese for "We'll figure out what to do with it after sweeps".
To send comments to the studio, email them to LyonsDen@nbc.com. Also if you check on the show's main NBC site under photos, there are some in there with Jewel & Rob Lowe. There used to be an ep discription as well, but I'm not sure if they left that up.
via e-mail:
I've read a few articles about the Lyon's den fiasco, apparently inside sources say Jewel refused to kiss Lowe...which seems out of character for her. She's got a lot of integrity, after all.
According to information I heard on the radio this morning (WKFR Kalamazoo, MI), The Lyons Den will be cancelled after fall sweeps in November. Jewel filmed three episodes of that show with Rob Lowe.
I moved my pc to the "location" today. I have freebsd setup along with several other services. I have ssh access to the machine to work on it now. I've probably got another 2 weeks before foolishgames.com will be on it. I plan on moving my other sites first. I will change DNS over to the new server by next monday.
I must move this site to another server that will be hosted on a DSL line. The new connection will be much slower. It would be a good idea to download files soon to avoid the slower connection.
The problem comes down to cost. I currently pay 100 dollars a month for a dedicated server that I administer running FreeBSD. I covered the cost with my part time web development job while I'm in college. Since my wife lost her job and took two part time jobs our income has dropped. On top of that, the windows 2000 server at work can not be upgraded to windows 2003 server since the company can't afford it. THe solution is that I will host my website and theirs on my PC at their office. I get free bandwidth and they get the use of my PC (a celeron 1.3 gig with 256mb ram and 40 gig hdd).
The computer is actually faster than the current server which is a 1.2 gig celeron with 256mb ram and a 20 gig hdd. Also my machine has a better NIC, a 3com 10/100 instead of an INTEL.
I will try to get them to purchase more bandwitdth, but it won't be overnight. FoolishGames.com alone currently transfers over 30 gig a month, plus e-mail and my other sites including justjournal.com. My current provider has multiple T3's, but my new setup will be 256KB upstream. Obviously that sucks. The site ran on an ISDN line between Oct 2000 and june 2001. Its possible, but downloads will suffer.
I will alter the new design to improve bandwidth use and hopefully publish that soon.
The sever is paid up till the last week of november so i will postpone moving the webserver as long as possible.
If anyone has suggestions, please email them to luke@foolishgames.com.
In case anyone is curious, the new server will also run FreeBSD 4.9. I am installing packages from ports today on the server. I have not installed any of the web server products yet.. tomcat, apache 2 httpd, etc.
I've been working on foolishgames.com's new look for about two weeks now. It will be a different approach for me. I also have several directories full of content ready to publish including pictures, and various other items. (over 50 new pictures)
My ideal plan is to roll out everything at once. I figure there will be a few more weeks of work left as I have plans at work and a large CS111 programming test next week.
Things were slowed up by my hard drive replacement recently. (10 gig to 80 gig in my iMac)
The server hosting foolishgames.com will be rebooted this weekend during the course of an operating system upgrade. FreeBSD 4.9 Release was released recently and the server will be upgraded. I also periodically upgrade select software packages and this weekend is scheduled for webserver software.
