Jewel's appearance on Michael Essany's new E Network show, which we
previously mentioned may broadcast this month, will be delayed in airing.
The show is scheduled to be edited in April and it may now air sometime
closer to Jewel's album release.
During their Women's History Month celebration, XM Satellite Radio will be
broadcasting an extensive schedule of live concert recordings and Jewel is
among the artists honored. Audio engineer, MrBB, produced an exclusive
one-hour Jewel concert for XM listeners that will broadcast during their
"Women On The March" All-Weekend-Finale. Tune in to channel "XMLive" next
Saturday evening, March 29th at 9:00 p.m. est. It will broadcast again
early Sunday, March 30th at 2:OO a.m. est. This exclusive Jewel concert
will also be rebroadcast at numerous times during the first week of April.
There's quite the lineup of concerts scheduled during next weekend's
celebration - 48 concerts, 48 women in 48 hours! You can download the
entire XM Live schedule by going here:
The material for the XM Live Jewel concert was recorded at one of the most
memorable performances on her solo acoustic tour last year, at The Lowell
Memorial Auditorium in Lowell, Massachusetts on November 15, 2002.
On Saturday, April 26th, Jewel will be headlining a benefit concert on the
second night of the Art In The Square Festival in Southlake, Texas.
Proceeds from this event are to be distributed among more than a dozen
North Texas charities. A limited quantity of tickets will be made
available to the public, beginning this coming Saturday morning, March
29th. We *think* tickets will be available through Ticketmaster, but check
local (Southlake area) advertising for this event just the same.
Again, this is information from a recent JewelLink: (March 19)
The forthcoming new Jewel single, “Intuition,” is set to ship to radio
stations nationwide next week. The song was written and produced by Jewel
and Cuban-American producer Lester Mendez, who collaborated with her
throughout the new album. Musicians joining Jewel on the song are Rusty
Anderson (electric guitars), Mark Oakley (acoustic guitars), Paul Bushnell
(bass), Michael Bolger (accordion), and Mendez on keyboards.
In a new press release going out today, Jewel comments on the new album:
“This record is really a natural extension for me. I began writing songs
when I was 16, and I heard all kinds of stuff in my head. But I didn't
have the skill to do it on guitar, so my first record was what I was able
to get out of my head through my hands. Over the years, I've learned more
about the craft… more about how to write, more about playing, more about
music, and more about lyrics. So I'm finally able to further embellish
the ideas I started with a long time ago. I've always been really
interested in all kinds of music, I loved hip-hop and rap when I was first
exposed to it in the ‘80s. I loved the beats, and I loved the artists who
had the ability to be very lyrical with those beats. I also like the
hypnotic nature of dance music; there is something very primordial about
it. And, of course, I love folk music… I love story-telling and socially
driven music. The tone of some of the new songs also leans towards jazz.
So you are going to hear my love of all these types of music on the new
album, and I tried to combine them in a way that makes sense. You have
folk melodies against hip-hop beats against a French accordion against
hand-clapping and whistling solos. But it still really sounds like me.”
A video for the new single, "Intuition," is also in the works, with
production planned to begin next week.
Lenedra recently passed on some information about Jewel's experience in the studio. This information first appeared in the Official JewelLink list.
Jewel is a little beside herself right now. Now that she is almost done
things are getting tight. They've fallen a tad behind ‘cause there have
been so many interruptions in the studio. A lot of press, and movie
people, and radio people and stuff all come over to hear the new music.
Which is fun and responses have been really terrific. But. She's not
getting much done! I just had a panicky call from her saying she's going
to have to close the studio to any more people or she'll never get her
vocals done. This is the week of final vocals and needless to say stress
isn’t too good for that.
Sort of a slow day. My dog George is sleeping on my lap.
We are tracking electric guitars. I am so happy with how it is all going.
I am really liking how it’s turning out.
I’m pretty satisfied with my lyrics now. One of my goals, remember, was
to make pop music more lyric-driven and have some fun with that. It feels
raw and really cool, even though it's more techno than any of my other
work.
I was worried at first, cause all our demos were done on computers, so
they all sounded too electronic, but now that we have live drums, and live
bass and acoustic guitars, and yes, even a whistling solo (performed by
yours truly), it sounds much more organic, while still maintaining its
fruity bouquet.
2003 will be an excellent year, with nice legs, and rich, nutty
undertones. Jeeez. Anyway, it's going fast and I’m happy so far.

***MESSAGE FROM LENEDRA
Hi Everyone,
A lot of you are wondering what it was like having the recording going on
at home. Jewel worked with Lester for about four weeks in her home studio
before they moved to a studio near L.A. Starting the album here was the
perfect thing for Jewel because she could leave every time it got
boring--which is often in the studio. There are frequent technological
problems, and tedious engineering stuff that create a lot of hang time and
at home she could simply get into another project or something.
It was fun spending time with the producer, Lester Mendez. He's a really
great guy, good human being. And very talented. We all shared a lot of
fun meals. It was great watching the songs build every day, seeing Jewel
and Lester's vision for a song start to take shape.
We got the final mix of the first single today and it is amazing. A
really energetic new exploration for Jewel. The single is titled
“Intuition,” but it ought to be called “Can't Sit Still.” I can’t wait
until you hear it—it’s scheduled to radio on April 7th.
On another note, we've gotten a lot of requests for more Jewel content on
her site. We are listening and exploring ways to provide it that is
manageable for us and affordable for you. I’ll write more on that as we
get feedback from you and determine what is possible.
We are also working on the enhanced portion of the CD now. What do you
want to see/hear there?
I am considering adding mp3 audio streaming to the site. I want some feedback before I go to the trouble. The files would be streamable from Winamp (windows) and iTunes 3 (apple). I think they would work with Real One Player as well. Basically i would setup several playlists with live performances that would loop. There are certain files that I want people to be able to listen to, but don't want to share just yet. I think this might be a nice compromise. If anyone is interested, please send me an e-mail via the form on the email page. (for those of you who are technical, I am planning on using darwin streaming server [quicktime] to do this. I have a test file working already.)
I've fixed some broken links on the site that I noticed in the logs. There still appears to be 3 broken links that I have not tracked down yet. I am still trying to find them. I also redid the images on the /jewel (homepage). The new png images use less colors and have been cleaned up. The file sizes are now about 15 to 20 KB instead of 100 and 50. That should help load time. I also noticed that IE6 for the PC was not handling the content negotiation mode I setup in apache. It reloaded things all the time and didn't cache them. (server uses pragma no cache on multiviews) Technically, it shouldn't do that with HTTP/1.1 but since it didn't work I turned on caching. This might impact people behind proxy servers, but it should fix the problems most people were having. Finally, I added a biography slideshow in quicktime format. My wife created the file on her PowerMac with the information in my current biography (on my hard drive). It is the most up to date version right now. There is probably only one error in it that is fixed in the htm version. You can download that file in the "other" category via the download area. The file is 40mb, but contains images and text.. it is very nice. I recommend this file only for broadband users.

Message From Jewel (after new album cover photoshoot):
Well, I hate photo shoots. The photographer was nice. Peter Robathan,
from England. This time I’m going for a look that matches the really
up-vibe of the music. Colorful. Something to really have some fun with. I
am fascinated by ‘80s stuff. Leg warmers. Socks in high heels. Fishnet
shirts. Geometric patterns on T-shirts. It’s hard to describe, but I
think it will look cool. Sort of Blondie-punk, pop stuff, you know?
It was 12 hours, and not too eventful. OK—sort of boring, sorry.
Hey—what the hell will I call my record? I’d like it to be just one word
that somehow describes the energetic mood. Like "Up," if Shania didn’t
already use it.
