After 9 years, I've decided to shut down foolishgames.com. In the next few weeks, I'll remove the website from the internet. My time is very limited and I want to focus my efforts on my other site www.justjournal.com. I'm still a Jewel fan, but not quite as "into" Jewel as I was some years ago.
If other sites would like to use my content, drop me an email. Most of it is available with a few exceptions. I can provide zip, sit or tar files of the information and copies of anything in a database. the site is about 300mb currently.
After three sessions together, "I'd say we're about 99 percent done," she said. "We just need to finish the background vocals, get some harmonies on there, get it cooked." She anticipates the album will come out in February.

Subject: Jewel-News: concert review--Thousand Oaks (last night)

Last nights performance in the Fred Kavli Theatre at the Thousand Oaks Civic
Arts Center was a nice treat for any seasoned Jewel fan or new Jewel fan
alike. She was energetic, passion filled and of course her same charming,
witty self captivating the audience in song and humor.
She was wearing a trendy/frayed (old/new rugged look) light-blue (denim) mini
skirt with brown cowboy boots and a tan tank/cami with a satin bow tied just
under the bust. She accented that with round, gold and black dangle earrings
and sported a soft modern day flip (Farrah but not really) with bangs swept to
her left temple. I took some pictures but I doubt they will be decent and I
need to fill up the rest of the roll before developing.
The set list:
1) Somewhere Over The Rainbow (acapella)
2) Near You Always
3) New Wild West
She joked around by asking about whether or not the photographers had left or
not because they were allowed to take pictures for only 3 songs. She said
during this time she liked to sing pretty songs that make her look pretty with
lots of "ooooo" sounding notes to avoid the double chin and then proceeded to
joke about how Celine Dion--being as thin as she is--still manages the
horrible double chin with her signature belting pose (and did this for the
audience). Jewel joked about how photographers take lots of pictures but
always use the bad ones accompanied by headlines saying, "Jewel badly needed
to urinate, why didn't she pee before the show?"
4) Satellite
She introduced this song saying she was going to sing some songs on her next
album and said that she wrote this when she first came to California.
5) Goodbye Alice In Wonderland
she said this was going on the new record and was "probably the most
autobiographical song (she) ever wrote."
At this point she started asking for requests. She commented on the
"bootlegging skills" of an audience member when she requested Wolf and Dolphin
(Cracker Thief!! Woo hoo!!). Someone in the first few rows requested Passing
Time and she asked, "How do you know that song?" then tried to find it in hum
but couldn't so she moved onto flipping someone off saying "Here's your free
bird!" when asked to play the well known cover. lol
6) Hands
7) Standing Still
She told her Bob Dylan story in her "valley girl" accent saying she wrote this
next song on tour with Bob.
8) Sometimes It Be That Way
9) Stephenville, TX
10) Angel (Cowboy Waltz)
She said this was one of the first songs she wrote for her dad
11) Cold Song
she introduced this song in the normal manner she always does "I'd like to
play you the best song I ever wrote..." building the audience up to think she
was going to play some profoundly awesome thought provoking song--you all know
how she does it.
12) Morning Song
She took requests and someone yelled "Jesus loves me!" and she said with a
smile in her voice, "I know."
13) Violet Eyes
She took as a request from the audience. She introduced it by saying, "This is
a sad song. I wrote this for my friend Jackie who died of cancer." It seemed
like this song really got to her maybe because it's getting close to the
anniversary of her friends passing because it seemed as though she had to hold
back tears singing this song. It was a definite tear jerker. At the end she
kept her head down, took a sip of tea, gathered herself and moved on.
Here she did her social anxiety disorder bit joking about the Paxil commercial
with someone holding hands with their mom walking on a beach, visions of
kitten and the like...how she's a hypochondriac already so if she has 3 of the
10 symptoms mentioned she needs the drug: feeling uncomfortable around the
in-laws, "yeah," taking longer than 60 seconds to fall asleep, "holy crap," do
you breathe? "I need the drugs." She ended that part of the bit by talking
about the speed-talker who talks you right out of it---"being shy around
people I don't know anyway? or anal leakage?" She manages to tie in there the
"super freak" fan of the year, naked with a Stephen Segal pony tail, covered
in Crisco singing POY at 1/4-1/2 speed, how she's armpit height and the deep
breather fan who wants to get her into his chair. She's such a silly goose. :)
You all know how this goes--its a regular thing for her, but I wanted to
mention it for those that haven't heard it before.
14) Intuition
15) YWMFM
Hitchhiking/Kermit the frog story
16) WWSYS
encore:
18) Per la Gloria D'adorarvi
19) Chime Bells
As soon as she left the stage "Can't Touch This" by MC Hammer followed
*blaring* from the speakers. lol
That was it! Sorry this is so long, but I promised myself that I would
actually go into more detail this time for those of you I have talked to and
haven't that have never seen her and want the details :).
I'm pretty sure I have all of the monologues mentioned from above recorded at
different venues (she needs some new material! lol ;)) if anyone that has
never heard them, wants to--she's pretty funny and they are worth a listen
(she'd be a mushroom if she were a man *wink*) :)

Maybe it was the long drive from Riverside to the valley. Maybe I
didn't get enough sleep the night before. But dang .... the show was
kind of boring to me. I found myself yawning a few times. She also did
not sing ONE single "new" song all night. What a bummer. I also have
to admit, her vocal abilities were still good. I was just bored. I
can't really place why.
Melissa already posted the set list, so I won't do it again. I'll just
comment on a few songs.
Somewhere Over the Rainbow: I haven't heard that live before, so that
was a treat. I really liked that.
Satellite: I haven't heard that one live before either. That sounded
great and the audience thought it was funny/clever.
The second time she asked for requests, I would like to think it was
me she heard. I waited for the audience to quiet down and requested
"Violet Eyes." Then someone else seconded that. So, I think it was me
she heard. Not sure of course. But in my mind, it will be me ;-) I
agree with Melissa. I think it was one of the most emotional
performances of the song. It really did seem like she was holding back
tears. And some parts, sounded choked up. It was a great performance.
I mean, overall,a Jewel show is always great. Maybe I was bothred by
the 13 year old girls next to me who kept sitting on each other and
whispering. I just didn't enjoy the show like I normally would. Hehe.
Weird?
Hope everyone enjoys the upcoming shows! Oh, yeah, and pictures ...
they are kind of far away since I was in Row J.

Jewel tosses out the set list
BY ROBIN HUIRAS
Times Correspondent
When Jewel performs, she accepts shout-out requests from the audience and
doesn't mind when people bootleg her music, which is a good thing for fans
planning to see her Sunday.
The ever-evolving musician, whose debut album "Pieces of You" hit the
charts 10 years ago, actually looks forward to the interplay between her
and her audiences when she performs.
"I think what's really fun about shows is when I'm up there alone -- I
can't really hear the crowd, but I really feel them more than hear -- and I
work around that feeling and what mood they're in and what mood I'm in and
the spirit all around," Jewel said last week.
This week, fans will be able to meet Jewel as she performs alone with her
acoustic guitar in the intimate setting of the Star Plaza Theater in
Merrillville.
Jewel never knows what songs she will choose from her expansive repertoire
when she takes to the stage, she says.
"I never write a list, every show is different," she says. "I just want to
meet the crowd and play different songs for them. That's why I'm able to
enjoy coming back to the same towns frequently, because audiences know that
they are going to continue hearing songs they haven't heard before."
Whether she plays something closer to her roots, penned when she was 16 and
just starting out, or a more organic arrangement combining newer
influences, her music reaches people in different ways, she says.
"Everybody's lives are specific and that's kind of the neat thing about
music, it seems to administer to people what their individual needs are, so
it does have much to do with me, but much to do with them," she said. "I
receive the same gift from music, I enjoy being a part of it, which is why
I really enjoy singing live. That and writing songs -- it's why I do what I
do."
Jewel has written and recorded five albums, selling close to 25 million
copies. Her most recent release, 2003's "0304," premiered at No. 2 on the
Billboard 200 chart.
But writing songs is a far different art than performing, she adds, "It's
moment to moment."
"Just like every person you meet is different, every crowd is, there are
times when they want to sit and listen and other times they just want to
loosen up and laugh and other times they just want to hear sad songs."
Jewel added she enjoys performing to her Northwest Indiana fan base and
Sunday's performance marks her third time performing at the Star Plaza.
"Crowds there are fun, they settle in and can really listen, but can also
be really enthusiastic and that's something I like."

Jewel isn't in the mood to pick up "Pieces"
By Kevin C. Johnson
Post-Dispatch Pop Music Critic
Thursday, Jul. 21 2005
The first half of 1995 saw the release of two fondly remembered CDs from
largely unknown female artists. The records - Jewel's "Pieces of You" and
Alanis Morissette's "Jagged Little Pill" - were released within months of each
other and ended up defining the year in music.
Both were greeted with critical acclaim and the type of blockbuster sales
rarely seen today. Morissette just revisited her debut, re-recording "Jagged
Little Pill" in commemoration of its 10th anniversary. But don't look for
Jewel
to follow suit by going back to her quietly introspective debut.
"I don't know why she's doing that," says Jewel, interviewed recently by phone
from her Los Angeles home. "I don't want to redo a record I've done. Maybe
there will be a time for that."
In fact, the Alaskan pop-folkie says she didn't even realize her "Pieces of
You" had reached the 10-year mark. Looking back at that key release, she says,
"It was a great time in the industry, and that's not something you're going to
see happen again because the nature of the industry changes so much. Who can
say what it was all about? Some of it was the music, some of it was the
timing,
and some of it was just culture. I never thought it would blow up the way it
did."
Jewel laments the changes in the industry. "I wish music weren't so oppressive
now. And if I had my way, I'd make a record every six months. But the business
being what it is, I feel lucky to still have a career. Nothing lasts forever."
Rather than spend time reflecting on "Pieces of You," these days Jewel is back
on the road with a quick summer tour. She's also prepping her next CD, which
will be "kind of a raw record. It'll be pretty emotionally driven, a personal
record, just what I'm feeling.
"There's only so much you can write about these days: It's either love or
politics. The same things that have been done forever. Maybe there's a better
way to rehash."
Although the songs are already written, Jewel is just starting to record. Some
of the material dates from years ago, while other songs were written
specifically for the still-to-be-titled disc, expected in February (after its
original announced release in September).
Jewel's most recent record, 2003's "0304," went gold but was the poorest
selling of her career. The CD had some fans and critics scratching their
heads:
It appeared that Jewel had ditched her old image and tarted it up a bit,
particularly on "Intuition," to better compete with the likes of Britney
Spears
and Christina Aguilera.
"I think anybody who didn't listen to the record felt that way," she says of
her "Intuition" video. "I guess people didn't get the joke in the video. It
was
such an obvious spoof on pop culture, on dance, rap and pop videos. It was
tongue-in-cheek. It should've been painfully obvious.
"But it's the same stuff in the writing that I'm known for. I didn't let go of
anything. It holds up to every standard I believe in. I felt I did some of the
best writing I'd ever done, and people who listened to it got it. But if you
just listened to 'Intuition,' you might not have gotten it."
On her new tour, coming to the Roberts Orpheum Theater Monday, Jewel promises
to "wing it." She took the same approach on her visit to the Family Arena in
St. Charles this time last year. The show was low-key and informal, with Jewel
taking requests and sharing many stories with fans.
"When I sing live, I never do a set list," she says. "I have 500 songs in my
catalog, and I wing it and take requests. Fans love the obscure material I
never remember, stuff I wrote when I was 19 that never made it onto a record
but was still an underground hit. There'll also be new stuff. Sometimes I talk
a lot, and sometimes I don't. It depends on my mood. Every show is different."
Jewel's "Pieces of You" vs. Alanis Morissette's "Jagged Little Pill"
"Pieces of You"
Release date: Feb. 28, 1995
Key songs: "Who Will Save Your Soul," "Foolish Games," "You Were Meant for Me"
Sales: 11 million
Grammys: None
What Amazon.com says: "Jewel's debut album, 'Pieces of You,' reveals a special
voice - strong and focused on both the whispery verses and the hooky choruses.
The recording also exposes an unfortunate tendency to present trite, hackneyed
sentiments as if they were oracular visions from a young prophet to a jaded
world."
Follow-ups: "Spirit" (1998), "This Way" (2001), "0304" (2003)
"Jagged Little Pill"
Release date: June 13, 1995
Key songs: "You Oughta Know," "Ironic," "Head Over Feet"
Sales: 16 million
Grammys: Album of the year, best rock album, best rock song and best rock
vocal
performance female for "You Oughta Know."
What Amazon.com says: "Her intensely personal lyrics grabbed the headlines,
but
the bravest departure here is the way Morissette's unique vocals stand
naked in
the mix - a technique that drives home the painful honesty of tracks. . . .
Morissette is a genuine original with a rare ability to make listeners care,
think, and question."
Follow-ups: "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie" (1998), "Alanis Unplugged"
(1999), "Under Rug Swept" (2002), "So-Called Chaos" (2004), "Jagged Little
Pill
Acoustic" (in stores Tuesday)

Hey all
I just stumbled upon the fact that "Planet Rock Profiles: Jewel" will be
airing on the network "Showtime Next" twice in the coming weeks. Sunday
July 31st at 10:00pm ET and again on Tuesday August 2nd at 9:30pm ET. It's
a 30 minute show.
The text from the Showtime Next network's website says:
Actress, poet and folk music icon Jewel Kilcher is profiled in this
biographical sketch that follows her from child prodigy performing before
Eskimo villages in Alaska to best-selling singer/songwriter behind "Who
Will Save Your Soul" and other hits.
Not recalling hearing of this show before and not at all sure if this has
aired before in the USA, I did an electronic search of the Jewel-digests
and the most recent mention to a show with the exact same name (and it was
airing only in the UK) a little over 4 years ago and THAT post mentions it
was the first airing in over 18 months.
I then decided to ask MrBB and he seems to think it has aired in Canada
before but he is not sure if it has aired in the United States.
The very FIRST mention of this was on the list in June 1999 with this post
from Andrew Fitzpatrick from Ireland:
This is just to let you know that we had the pleasure of interviewing Jewel
for the new series of PLANET ROCK PROFILES while she was in Dublin
recently. The programme will air internationally, starting on the UK'S ITV
Network at 1.45 am on 29th June. Further information on the programme and
on other air dates will be available on our website (currently under
construction) - www.planetrock.net.
Further information on the series:
PLANET ROCK PROFILES is one of the world's leading long-running music
series. Since 1995, 77 programmes have been produced and it has been seen
in 37 countries.
The series consists of half-hour interview based music profiles featuring
many of the planet's most popular music artists. The latest batch of 25
episodes is now in production and will debut on the UK'S ITV Network, for
whom it's been commissioned, on 29th June 1999.
So, even if it has aired in the US before, I guess it's rare and if you get
this network, maybe check it out. (even though it's 7 year-old stuff)
Wasn't sure if anyone else knew this but according to Jewel's website she'll
be on tv tonight:

JEWEL ON EXTRA!
Jewel talks to the folks at Extra! at a recent photo shoot. Her interview
airs on Extra! this Wednesday, July 13 at 7pm on NBC.
