Jewel works to help homeless

Jewel Becomes Ambassador for Virgin Unite

We're pleased to announce that Jewel has become the newest Ambassador for
Virgin Unite! Her first mission is teaming up with Virgin Mobile USA,
StandUp For Kids and YouthNoise to bring attention to the problem of
youth homelessness. These efforts are part of The RE*Generation, a
campaign to connect at-risk youth with young people who want to help and
make a difference around the issue of homeless youth.

As someone who was a homeless teen herself, this is an issue close to
Jewel's heart. On June 19, she testified about her experiences as part of
a hearing before the U.S. Congress on the crisis of youth homelessness,
disconnected youth, and youth aging out of foster care.

"I know first-hand what it's like to be young and without a roof over my
head," said Jewel. "I'm blessed that my own story has had such a positive
ending. But the same cannot be said for the over one million kids out
there on the streets who are at risk and have no voice in society. I'm
honored to join forces with those who are rallying to generate real
awareness about this critical issue, and look toward solutions on both
the national and community levels."

Together with Virgin Unite and charitable partners StandUp For Kids and
YouthNoise, Virgin Mobile USA organized a national task force to advocate
for Congressional recognition of November as "National Homeless Youth
Awareness Month," with support from The Children's Health Fund, The
National Alliance to End Homelessness, and other like-minded
organizations. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Sen. Martinez (R-FL) have
jointly sponsored a bi-partisan resolution in the U.S. Senate and Rep.
Jim McDermott (D-WA), Rep. Jerry Weller (R-IL) and Rep. Mike Fergusson
(R-NJ) are working to introduce a similar resolution in the House of
Representatives.

"This Resolution and designated month will go a long way toward building
awareness of the more than one million children and teens that are
without homes and in crisis," said Dan Schulman, CEO of Virgin Mobile
USA. "We trust November will serve as a call to action for Americans to
learn more about this vital issue, as well as find ways to support the
organizations working to help homeless youth in their own communities."

"Unfortunately, families are the fastest-growing segment of the homeless
population. We have to bring attention to the number of youth alone on
the streets and work to ensure our children have a roof over their
heads," said Sen. Lautenberg. "Designating November 'National Homeless
Youth Awareness Month' is an important first step to encourage local
governments, businesses, community organizations and volunteers to work
together to give at-risk youth a home."

New Website Design

Several years ago, I stopped working on Foolish Games. I left quite a few links broken, navigation is wrong, and the site is difficult to navigate. The reasons I stopped working on the site haven't changed much. However, I will be uploading a new site design in a few weeks with corrected navigation and a little bit of editing. You can preview the design at http://people.emich.edu/lholt3/

The site has some school work on it as well. That will be removed when its migrated here. This English class work has given me a reason to update the site. :)

Review - Spaceland (Silver Lake) impromptu showcase with John Rich

This is an e-mail review from the EDA/jewel news mailing list. (jewel@smoe.org)

man oh man ... I'm a Jewel high. *sigh*

The show at Spaceland was
fantastic. All you haters shut up. All the other artists were really good
too. Check out this dude and this
girl.
They worked the stage. I also loved how well John Rich and Jewel got along.
I really look forward to Jewel's new country album. I just love the fact
that I got to see her in this tiny club (probably 100-150 people) for $8
($12 with the service charge). This show was brought to us by
MuzikMafia(Muzik Without
Prejudice).

So ... from memory, I believe Jewel sang

- Near You Always (forgets words ... a few times)
- Foolish Games
- Social anxiety disorder story
- Intuition
- Thump Thump (new song)
- You Were Meant For Me
- Kiss Your Ass (OMGOMGOMFG ... even though it was only the first
verse)
- Kermit story
- Who Will Save Your Soul

This showcase was really interesting. Jewel was really gracious to the other
artists there. She was respectful and attentive and really shared the
spotlight. John was too. It was just awesome. Also, John friggin bought
drinks for EVERYONE!!! He was like ... from now until we leave, it's on ME.
How crazy!!! He can afford it I guess. But see, THAT is what music is about.
Sharing the art and the love. Anyway, since they were drinking ... it got a
little spunky. We got to see Jewel's "saucy" side ... I love the dirty,
swearing Jewel. It's just funny sometimes. Although, I did think that her
singing wasn't the best I've seen her at (which might be attributable to the
drinking ... but it's still Jewel and I can't complain that much.

Oh, and of course! While this certain battle was going on (see video below),
Jewel starts "Kiss Your Ass". When was the last time she even sang that
song??? She sings one line then says she forgot the words and asked Larry if
he remembered the words (which made it the 3rd time she asked him that night
- twice during Near You Always if you're keeping count). Anyway, I had
brought my "fan book" with me on a whim and finally I get to use it! I
scream out that I have the lyrics and she called me up! It was so cool! So
once I was there of course I was snapping pictures left and right.

And that is why, I'm on a Jewel High.

Oh, and forgive the quality of the video. Excuse my shakiness as I freak out
because she called me up to give her the lyrics.

Were any other EDAs there, besides the ones I saw (Hi Mike Carmona and umm,
other Mike, and Larry) ...

Goodlife Recipe Ad Campaign

I received this e-mail regarding an advertising campaign using a recent recording:

I came across your “Foolish Games” page and since you are a devoted Jewel fan I thought you might be interested in seeing some of her latest work. She recently recorded her own version of Frank Sinatra’s “The Good Life,” which is currently being featured in commercials for The Goodlife Recipe™ brand. To see behind-the-scenes footage of Jewel’s recording session and a brief interview, check out http://www.thegoodliferecipe.com.

Strange Jewel article

I wasn't going to update this site anymore, but this is just so weird I feel I must.

http://www.rachaelraymag.com/content/linkToThis.do?contentId=34252&titleText=Celeb%20Fridge%20-%20Jewel

This article outlines what Jewel has in her fridge on the tour bus. I'm not the only one who eats too much pizza.

Jewel Supports Breast Cancer and Homelessness Advocacy

As part of Lifetime's "Stop Breast Cancer for Life" campaign, Jewel delivered more than 12 million petition signatures to Capitol Hill urging Congress to pass the bipartisan Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act of 2005. The bill sought to ban "drive-through" mastectomies, where women were discharged from the hospital just hours after surgery. Jewel also served as honorary chairperson of the 2006 Help the Homeless Walk in Washington, D.C.

Site content...

One person has contacted me so far to take the content to start another site. I'm in the process of bundling it all up. Is anyone else interested?

Content on this site

I've had a few people concerned about access to the content on this site. I've decided to leave it up, but remove audio downloads section. Most of the audio has gradually become available on the internet in other forms (mp3 etc) so there is no point in mirroring it. Plus since the RIAA is on satilite radio's ass now, I don't feel comfortable leaving it up long term.
