an Earth Day Festival in Houston, Texas, being put on by radio station
KRBE. Details are not yet available, but we have confirmed this date.
We'll keep you informed as details become available.
All of the lyrics were written by Jewel, as always, and she co-wrote all
of the music. Her collaborators include Lester Mendez (Jewel's
co-producer, famed for his work with Shakira, Santana, and Enrique
Iglesias) on 10 tracks. A track called "Fragile Heart" with Anthony Bell,
a member of the A Touch Of Jazz writing family (founded by DJ Jazzy Jeff),
who has worked with Common and Pharrell Williams. One track with Guy
Chambers, who has worked with Robbie Williams and Kylie Minogue, among
many others. And two tracks with Rick Nowels, who of course worked with
Jewel on tracks for her last album such as "Standing Still," "This Way"
and "I Won't Walk Away."

RADIO MOVES TO JEWEL?S NEW BEAT:
"INTUITION" FEELS LIKE AN OUT-THE-BOX SMASH;
NEW ALBUM, "0304," PREMIERES JUNE 3rd
In its first week at radio stations, "Intuition," the new single from
Atlantic recording artist Jewel, has been greeted with an instant,
overwhelmingly positive reaction from coast to coast. Even before its
official add date, the song is already on the air in a host of major
markets, including New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Washington D.C.,
Charlotte, Atlanta, Tampa, Orlando, Miami, Houston, Pittsburgh, Columbus,
Cleveland, Indianapolis, St. Louis, Sacramento, Seattle, and many others.
Listeners across the country are calling their local stations with a flood
of requests and praise for the song.
"Intuition" is the first track from Jewel?s forthcoming fifth album,
entitled "0304." Slated to be in stores on June 3rd, the album finds the
multi-platinum singer/songwriter moving in new musical directions inspired
by her burgeoning interest in modern dance beats and textures. The song
was written and produced by Jewel and Cuban-American producer Lester
Mendez (Shakira, Santana, Enrique Iglesias), who collaborated with her
throughout the new album. A companion video for "Intuition," directed by
Marc Klasfeld (Sum 41, Floetry, Vanessa Carlton, Nelly, Alien Ant Farm),
is currently in production.
Jewel will perform "Intuition" live on national television for the first
time when she appears on NBC-TV?s Toyota Concert Series on Today on
Friday, May 2nd. A month later, on Monday, June 2nd, she will herald the
arrival of "0304" with a special eve-of-release performance on NBC-TV?s
Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
In other Jewel news, "Intuition" has also been chosen by Schick to be
used as the music for a major national television advertising campaign to
launch the company?s new all-in-one shaver for women, also called
Intuition?. Jewel will perform "Intuition" live in a special concert at
Schick?s Intuitionfest? 2003, taking place in New York?s Central Park on
Saturday, May 10th.
Since the release of her first album eight years ago, Jewel has continued
to explore fresh avenues, branching out from her folk roots to incorporate
rock, pop, country, blues, jazz, and classical influences into her work.
Each successive album has found her experimenting with new sounds and
widening her artistic scope, while retaining her uniquely personal lyrical
style and musical authenticity. Still in her twenties, Jewel enjoys a
rare career longevity among her generation of artists. Her four previous
albums have sold 25 million copies worldwide.
Here is an excert from a JewelLink mailing:
Now it's really official; Jewel's new album, in stores June 3, will be
titled "0304." Lenedra Carroll says, "One of Jewel's least favorite things
to do is album and book titles. After months of deliberation, she decided
to title it "0304" as a snapshot of her interaction with the current
American pop culture."
Please take note: "Intuition" will be released commercially in the USA in
TWO different CD formats. First up; on May 6th, a CD single of
"Intuition" with a live acoustic version of "Standing Still," and then on
May 13, an enhanced CD maxi-single, which will include "Intuition" dance
remixes and the "Making of Intuition" video. There will also be a
commercial vinyl release of the dance remixes available May 13.
In a recent JewelLink letter, Lenedra said the following "First some back story. With
downloading so prevalent, revenues are drastically down for both record
labels and artists; this isn't news to any of you. Naturally this means no
one can afford to do things in the way they used to be done. For record
companies this results in the recording and promotion budgets being
drastically cut. No artist is exempt to this, so it affects us too."
Later in the letter, she went on to explain that Jewel has made a promotion deal with Schick. They will use one of her songs in some of their advertising, and in return Jewel gets money for clearwater, and extra revenue to promote her new album.
I disagree with the reasoning behind this endevor, but the fact is Jewel does need additional money for promotion to keep her career going smoothly. Atlantic Records is known for week promotions, especially overseas. This Way was marketed very poorly, and even Pieces of You overseas was a disaster. They simly don't know how to market Jewel or are even willing to try.
As for mp3's distroying the record industry, I don't believe that is true. Before mp3, there were tapes. Friends used to share songs on tapes. The record industry claimed that tapes broke revenues. I don't see how. MP3 audio has helped the sales of old albums, including 80s stuff and even classic artists like the Beatles and Elvis. The only way that mp3 audio is hurting the record industry, is that people realize that many modern artists are not taleneted. They can't market songs on the artists looks like they used to. To bad! Listen to music because you like it, not because you are told to like it.
Personally, I have purchased many albums that I would not have know about if it weren't for mp3's. Yes I have a large mp3 collection, but I also own most of those albums on CD. I have a few hundred CDs here and I did encode them.
A kind person e-mailed me this list of previous chart positions for some of Jewel's singles. (Sorry about the formatting, I will make a webpage later with this info)
