2008-04-24 17:58:50  More from the Borders concert:

I remembered a few more details. Jewel talked about her experiences being homeless. She said that she was working at a computer warehouse answering phones when her boss came on to her. She told him no, and the next day when she went in to get her check, her boss would not give it to her. Her landlord evicted her as she had missed payments before and she lived over a year on the streets. Her car was stolen (that she lived in), and she ended up replacing it with her famous vw van.

Stronger woman was written for a friend's daughter who's had some relationship problems. I do was described as an "honest song."

2008-04-24 17:54:39  Jewel at Borders in Ann Arbor:

I just got back from the free concert downtown Ann Arbor where Jewel performed at the first Borders store. I arrived at 2:30 p.m. for a 4:00 p.m. show and all seats were taken. I managed to grab a coffee and sit on the floor where I could still see the stage. By for 4:20 p.m., Jewel was performing with a packed room. The whole top floor of the building was full of people. The show was recorded, although I don't know what they will do with the footage.

This might not be a complete setlist as I forgot paper. (there might be one more song)

Hands
Stronger Woman (current single)
I do (awesome song! maybe next single)
Rosy and Mick
Who Will Save Your Soul

Jewel did a brief Q and A between Rosy and Mick and WWSYS. One person asked her if she had "faith". She responsed of course and explained her faith in context of the struggles she faced while homeless and what that experience taught her.

Another guy asked her if she had any advice for women dealing with society. She said that there is discriminiation of all types all over the world and that she doesn't feel she can preach, but she's glad that some people have found comfort in her music. She also asked if he wanted to know the answer for a family member and he said it was a general question as women face difficult challenges in society.

She told a story about Bob Dylan. Most people have heard the WWSYS story where Bob asked to meet her backstage. I guess she had a dream when she was 16 about opening for Bob and he came on to her in the dream. She was worried about meeting him because of her dream. She said he was a gentlemen and made a joke about him being gay since he didn't hit on her. She then said "I should be struck by lightening for even saying that." A dj said something recently on the radio, she said, that men have two moods.. hungry and horney. She also said that women get offended when men do or do not hit on them.

Jewel is with a new label and she seemed to avoid talking about Atlantic for the most part.

She talked about how much she likes Ann Arbor. She mentioned her first song was Who Will Save Your Soul that she wrote while hitch hiking (and riding trains) to mexico during break from interlocken. She made a joke about sounding like kermit the frog on the album version and did an imiation of herself playing it. It was rather amusing. She said she was laughing all the way to the bank.

The songs were great. The last concert I saw was in Clio, MI several years ago. Her voice wasn't that good at the time. She got it back in a big way. It was amazing to see her in a smaller venue like that. It is the first time I've had that opportunity. She was wearing a green dress. She talked about Ty a bit. Said they were camping in the mountains during 9/11 and they came out on 9/13 and noticed the flags and signs but didn't know what happened right away. They heard a dj talk about it and then play Hands on the radio.

2007-06-21 14:18:03  Jewel works to help homeless:

Jewel Becomes Ambassador for Virgin Unite

We're pleased to announce that Jewel has become the newest Ambassador for
Virgin Unite! Her first mission is teaming up with Virgin Mobile USA,
StandUp For Kids and YouthNoise to bring attention to the problem of
youth homelessness. These efforts are part of The RE*Generation, a
campaign to connect at-risk youth with young people who want to help and
make a difference around the issue of homeless youth.

As someone who was a homeless teen herself, this is an issue close to
Jewel's heart. On June 19, she testified about her experiences as part of
a hearing before the U.S. Congress on the crisis of youth homelessness,
disconnected youth, and youth aging out of foster care.

"I know first-hand what it's like to be young and without a roof over my
head," said Jewel. "I'm blessed that my own story has had such a positive
ending. But the same cannot be said for the over one million kids out
there on the streets who are at risk and have no voice in society. I'm
honored to join forces with those who are rallying to generate real
awareness about this critical issue, and look toward solutions on both
the national and community levels."

Together with Virgin Unite and charitable partners StandUp For Kids and
YouthNoise, Virgin Mobile USA organized a national task force to advocate
for Congressional recognition of November as "National Homeless Youth
Awareness Month," with support from The Children's Health Fund, The
National Alliance to End Homelessness, and other like-minded
organizations. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Sen. Martinez (R-FL) have
jointly sponsored a bi-partisan resolution in the U.S. Senate and Rep.
Jim McDermott (D-WA), Rep. Jerry Weller (R-IL) and Rep. Mike Fergusson
(R-NJ) are working to introduce a similar resolution in the House of
Representatives.

"This Resolution and designated month will go a long way toward building
awareness of the more than one million children and teens that are
without homes and in crisis," said Dan Schulman, CEO of Virgin Mobile
USA. "We trust November will serve as a call to action for Americans to
learn more about this vital issue, as well as find ways to support the
organizations working to help homeless youth in their own communities."

"Unfortunately, families are the fastest-growing segment of the homeless
population. We have to bring attention to the number of youth alone on
the streets and work to ensure our children have a roof over their
heads," said Sen. Lautenberg. "Designating November 'National Homeless
Youth Awareness Month' is an important first step to encourage local
governments, businesses, community organizations and volunteers to work
together to give at-risk youth a home."

2007-06-18 16:29:31  New Website Design:

Several years ago, I stopped working on Foolish Games. I left quite a few links broken, navigation is wrong, and the site is difficult to navigate. The reasons I stopped working on the site haven't changed much. However, I will be uploading a new site design in a few weeks with corrected navigation and a little bit of editing. You can preview the design at http://people.emich.edu/lholt3/

The site has some school work on it as well. That will be removed when its migrated here. This English class work has given me a reason to update the site. :)
